Forbes: Africa's Most Successful Women: Mo Abudu

  • Africa’s Most Successful Women introduces you to the most outstanding African women who are making giant strides in business, politics, technology, entrepreneurship and leadership on the continent and elsewhere around the world. Article below written by Mfonobong Nsehe for Forbes

Mo Abudu, a 50 year-old Nigerian media entrepreneur and talk show host, is the founder of Ebony Life TV, a fast-growing black African multi-broadcast entertainment network, which showcases informative and entertaining programmes that portray Africa at its best. Abudu, who has been described by international news outlets as ‘Africa’s Africa’, is keen in her resolve to rewrite Africa’s story. And it’s time you took notice. In a recent email interview, she recounts her entrepreneurial journey and reflects on the lessons she has learned along the way.
You are the host of ‘Moments with Mo’, one of the most successful syndicated talk shows on African regional television. And now you run an African television network. Walk me through your journey as a media entrepreneur
My passion to help change the narrative about Africa began to grow as far back as when I was a teenager living in the UK, schooling in Tunbridge Wells in Kent, a town that had just a few blacks at the time. As I have said many times in the past, here, I had to learn to stand up for myself, to defend my identity and my race in an environment where you continually got asked the most ridiculous and mind-boggling questions like “Do you guys live in trees and holes in Africa?” “Do you guys dance around fires?” “What do you eat for breakfast?” Very ignorant questions. Those sort of questions could either make or break your spirit but I was very determined that I was going to stay strong. This kind of afro-pessimism simply fuelled a burning, deep-seated desire in my subconscious to one day help to rewrite the African story; to get people to talk about the issues that affect our society and to tell the African narrative in a contemporary and interesting way; to change the perception the world had of us; to let the world know that in spite of our challenges as a developing continent, Africans are not a bunch of savages but mostly a breed of gifted and remarkable people. So, after my education and a flourishing modelling career in the UK, I returned to Nigeria in my late twenties. My children had reached their teens; I had begun enjoying a successful career as Head of Human Resources and Administration for oil giant, Esso Exploration and Production Nigeria Limited (ExxonMobil). I always say that this experience at ExxonMobil was the best thing that happened to me at that time because the job gave me an invaluable understanding of corporate structure and business discipline, which would eventually prove very useful in my future business endeavours, to include the Protea Hotel Oakwood Park, of which I remain a shareholder and director; Vic Lawrence & Associates, now one of Nigeria’s leading outsourcing firms, where I also remain founder, and so on. However, as successful as all these business ventures have thankfully been, nothing perhaps has given me the most fulfilment as the prospect of exploiting the media as a tool to affect global perceptions about Africa. So, with no TV experience whatsoever, I had approached DStv back then with the Moments with Mo proposal which I had hoped would persuade them to see that it was time Africans had a talk show that projected all that was positive, progressive and celebratory about the continent. I had seen a gap in the market for talk shows that were quintessentially African on the DStv bouquet. I had observed that there were talk shows on NTA, and other Nigerian channels but there wasn’t a single Pan-African talk show at the time. I did not get a positive response from DStv as I was told they were not looking for a Pan-African talk show on the platform at the time. But interestingly, in response to the need for local content on the platform, the window of opportunity soonopened for us and that was how, in 2006, Moments with Mo was born out of the vision to build and project a new, stronger, more independent and more confident Africa; an Africa that speaks for itself; that celebrates its people and achievements and solves its own problems.Ihad taken about 5 pilots of my talk show to them back then but they were all rejected and eventually, one was accepted. And even at that point, I was told they were not going to commission, that they were only going to license, which means they would buy the content from you at an agreed price. So I was told to go and look for sponsors, which I did, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Why did you choose to then start EbonyLife TV, Africa’s first global black entertainment network, and describe the transition from talk show host to head of a television company, navigating a teething media business sector with no prior experience?
The irony was that as far back as 2006 when I first approached DStv with the proposition that Africa was ripe for its own Oprah Winfrey or Ellen DeGeneres show, I was at the same time already requesting for a global TV channel opportunity. At the same time I was exploring channel possibilities with SKY in the UK. I have always reckoned that the vision to project Africa in a different, more positive light, needed a big platform and this was what spurred me to start thinking of establishing EbonyLifeTV. Looking back now and considering how ambitious the dream was and all we had to surmount to arrive at where we are now, one has to admit that God’s appointed time is always the best. I think, for the media however, the sector may have been run by people who are very passionate about the sector rather than people who are business managers, suffice to say it is crucially important to understand the business of the media. You have to be very passionate about what you do and at the same time, be a business manager, which includes having a solid business plan.I don’t think the financial sector in Nigeria understands our sector, I can tell you this because we spent a long time at strategy sessions with expatriate financial consultants who really understood media businessto help identify what the revenue streams in TV are because in every business, there has to be a way to make money. It’s not just about the passion to sell Africa’s story, if you want it to generate money, there’s got to be something bankable in it. Sometimes, you may not have all the expertise required to make what you dream of in terms of profitability, you then have to find someone that is business savvy enough to show you how this business works. He will also tell you how long it is going to take for you to break even, especially if the business is media. Media is one of those businesses that take off very slowly, so you know that borrowing money at a high interest rate to run the media business is not the way to go. Gaining this understanding was key in getting EbonyLife TV off the ground and running till today.

How would you describe EbonyLife TV and the kind of programming it provides?
EbonyLife TV creates content that speaks to the continent’s most important demographic, the custodians of the present and of the future, the youth aged 18 to 34. We believe no one is speaking to this key demographic of the continent the way we do. This is a demographic that is extremely passionate and confident; tremendously creative and global-minded. It is one that craves a platform for self-definition and self-expression; one that sees a different Africa, an Africa that tells its own story through the showcasing of the continent’s best talents, from lifestyle and entertainment to fashion and music, education, information, love and relationships. So, with the mantra “Live the EbonyLife”, our channel is proud to be broadcasting premium, original and exclusively African programming which is both inspirational and aspirational, celebrating style and success while motivating the audience to dream and dream big. Our programming is one that leaves the viewer with a cool, glossy, polished and sophisticated experience, from reality to talk; drama to entertainment and comedy. Through our programming, we also avail companies amazing brand integration and placement opportunities like never before. We believe it is very vital to give African brands, big and small, the opportunity to be seen on a global scale, showing the world that African brands can compete with the world’s best.

What lessons have you learned in business?
I have learned that information is power. The media business in Nigeria and indeed, Africa is grossly underestimated and the windows of opportunity need to be further explored. A lot of people do not understand the power of the information. One needs to be armed with information in order to successfully navigate any venture. Information is your compass. If you know better, you will do better. Before deciding to enter into any venture, one must, to the best of their ability have explored possibilities for growth, foreseen challenges, made projections, thought exhaustively through every inch and breadth of the venture and researched what other people have done to succeed and where they failed.

What advice do you have for those who desire to follow your entrepreneurial footsteps?
Anyone who wishes to be an entrepreneur must know that bright ideas are great, however, they are not even half of the work; execution is everything. Yes, as the saying goes, ‘there is nothing more powerful than an idea whose time has come’, but when that time comes, you must be prepared to bleed sweat, tears and blood to bring your ideas to life. For women, never ever see your gender as a handicap. Never think yourself inferior. Be ready to do twice the work for half the usual reward. When the door isn’t opened, kick down the door. Take the regular harassment and other obstacles women face in stride. In fact, be prepared for them. Be prepared to be told off, to be told you are not good enough, to go unrewarded for even doing the same work your male counterpart has done. Work with your passion, let it consume and drive you. Do not be distracted. On down days, it will keep you going. Also, surround yourself with like minds. In fact, you should exhaustively curate those who will go along with you on your journey. I can’t say that enough.

Nathan Sogo: Petroleum Industry Bill…The Best Candidate for 2015

    By: Emmanuelomobhude On: 00:26
  • Share The Gag

  • The petroleum industry is the life of the Nigerian economy, official records from the budget of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, shows that the petroleum industry accounted for about 29.1% of GDP and 78% of total government revenues through fiscal year 2012.
In the last fifteen quarters, contribution of the oil sector to national output has continued to decline. The evolving global energy market dynamics suggest an urgent need to take a sober look at the Nigerian oil and gas subsector in particular and the energy sector in general. This is essential, given the importance of the sector to the Nigeria economy. Despite the declining contribution to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) –currently at 13.42%, the extreme dependence of government finances and external trade balances on proceeds from the sector exposes the nation to significant risks from oil price and production shocks.
The PETROLEUM INDUSTRY BILL 2012 is a 223 page document with 362 sections and 5 schedules. The Bill is divided into 9 parts, which proposes to cover the entire spectrum of the oil and gas industry. The PIB seeks to establish a legal, fiscal and regulatory framework for the petroleum industry in Nigeria in order to rejuvenate the sector which experts believed has been stagnant for many decades.
    Background to the Bill
The PETROLEUM INDUSTRY BILL 2012 is the culmination of several years of efforts at industry reform. The process began under President Obasanjo in 2000, with the establishment of the Oil and Gas Implementation Committee (“OGIC”). OGIC issued a report and policy document, which was later approved by the Yaradua government and resulted in the Petroleum Industry Bill 2008 being forwarded to the 6th National Assembly. The Petroleum Industry Bill 2008 went through several redrafts including a wholesale amendment by the executive arm of the government (the Interagency Team Draft) but ultimately failed to pass during the 6th National Assembly.
    Fundamental Objectives
•Vests Oil & Gas resources in the sovereign State of Nigeria.
•Separates policy, regulation and commercial activities
•Licenses, leases and permits granted only through guided procedures established by the Act.
•Any company shall apply and be granted leases, permits in accordance with the PIB.
•Management and allocation of petroleum resources in accordance with the principles of good governance, transparency, and to promote sustainable development and economic value to Nigeria.
•Guarantees government participation in licenses or leases and in the exploitation of natural gas..
•Honor international environmental provisions and obligations.
•Encourages community relations and the development of Nigerian Content.
    Economic Benefit of PIB
Nigeria’s annualized real GDP growth forecast averaged 7.5% in 2010 and continues to maintain this momentum into 2015 barring any major unforeseen circumstances. Also, oil demand was expected to rise by an estimated 288,000b/d in 2010 to 395,000b/d in 2015, representing 6-7% average annual growth rate. Nigeria’s oil revenue has been on the exponential climb as the prices of crude oil have continued to surge giving the country a range of 55% to 60% over and above the 2011 budget benchmark price of $65.
According to the National Bureau of Statistics, revenue from oil exports rose by 46% to $59billion in 2010 as prices increased and companies raised output on improved security in the Niger Delta. Nigeria earned $196 billion from oil and gas exports in the four years up to 2010 with oil revenue accounting for 80% of government income and 95% of foreign exchange income between 2010 and 2020, it is projected that there will be a cumulative growth of 49.6% in Nigerian oil and gas liquids production, with volumes rising steadily to 3.5 million b/d by the end of the 10-year forecast period. Oil consumption is set to increase by 96.6%, with growth slowing to an assumed 7.5% per annum towards the end of the period and the country using 567,000b/d by 2020. Gas production is expected to rise to 80 billion cubic meters by the end of the period. With demand rising by 246% between 2010 and 2020, export potentials should increase to 35 billion cubic meters, largely in the form of liquified natural gas.
Despite federal government’s receipt of about 95% of accruing oil revenue after costs, an estimated 70% of the 150 million residents in Nigeria live below the poverty line with the attending social and environmental consequences. The proposed PIB seeks to enhance the drive to reduce the pervasive unemployment scourge while spreading the oil wealth more equitably through establishing linkages between the petroleum industry and other critical sectors of the Nigeria economy.
In line with global best practices, it will create better room for environmental protection of the Niger Delta, and stiff sanctions for defaulters – oil spillage, deforestation etc. No doubt, government revenues will see a massive boost from the various taxes that will accrue to government coffers, especially from the following sources: Joint Venture Cash Calls Royalty, Petroleum Profit Tax, Rent, NNPC earnings from crude oil sales, proceeds from domestic market, and penalty from gas flared, pipeline licenses and other fees, excise and VAT on domestic crude. Hopefully, with transparent dealings by all concerned, the $6billion theft of crude oil in the country will be checkmated.
Necessary skills set will find their place in the oil and gas industry. It will be illegal for foreigners to contend with Nigerians for the same job positions. They will be under studied by local counterparts for necessary skills transfer and materials sourcing this will create more jobs will be created for Nigerian contractors especially in the oil producing states to fully address the long years of maximum neglect they have suffered through lopsided political actions. It is often said that Nigeria has more gas than oil. The future of gas in the country will find expression through the massive investment that will flow to the gas utilization sector, fully maximizing its use in homes, and boosting the power sector as well. The heady subsidy scheme that has become a racket for saboteurs will go with full deregulation and liberalization of the downstream sector.
    Conclusion
The continued delay in the passage of the PIB was responsible for the large scale abuses and illegalities being witnessed in the nation’s oil sector? Yet those who should put pressure on the National Assembly over the fate of this all important bill could best be said to have expressed mere casual interest or at worst curious indifference. The relentless crude oil export decline, which has already savaged the budgets of Federal, States and Local Governments in 2014, will increase the economic hardship being experienced now and might reduce GDP growth next year. Even at the projected 5.8% for 2014, few new jobs have been generated relative to the volume of job seekers turned out by our schools annually. Slower growth will certainly exacerbate the intractable situation with respect to mass unemployment particularly among the youths.
I pray and hope that PIB will be voted in come 2015 before any GEJ, GMB, AA.

Pics: Chinese car company unveils $22,000 copy of Range Rover

  • Nothing wey China no dey copy...lol. UK giant car company Jaguar Land Rover is furious after a relatively unknown Chinese car company called LandWind unveiled a car that looked almost exactly like the Range Rover E-vogue which at $22,000 cost $48,000 less than the Evogue which is about $70,000. Above is the Evogue and below is the Chinese car. It was launched at a motor show in China last week. Continue...

Jaguar Land Rover say they may take legal action against the company. Jaguar Land Rover chief executive Dr Ralf Speth told Autocar magazine:
‘The fact that this kind of copying is ongoing in China is very disappointing. The intellectual property (IP) is owned by Jaguar Land Rover and if you break that IP then you are in breach of international regulations.’

LG’s Innovative Door-In-Door Creates Market Trend

    By: Emmanuelomobhude On: 09:20
  • Share The Gag

  • With the unrelenting pace of modern life, a tidy, well-organized refrigerator is something that most people can only dream about. While we’d all love to keep our fridges ordered and clean, long work hours and other commitments often end up getting in the way. Having to throw away long-forgotten food items and making unnecessary purchases are just some of the more common annoyances of a household refrigerator in disarray. Continue...

To help restore order in the kitchen, LG Electronics (LG) set about finding answers to the question, “How can we make a fridge that’s more convenient to use and easier to keep organized?” After extensive consumer research, and a great deal of hard work, the company released a brilliantly rendered solution: the unique and innovative Door-in-Door.

According to a survey conducted by LG, four out of 10 consumers cannot, with any degree of certainty, name what’s inside their refrigerator. This lack of familiarity often results in food items being forgotten and eventually discarded. Moreover, a messy fridge leads one out of four consumers to waste time and money on unnecessary trips to the store to buy items they already have.

LG's Door-in-Door helps resolve such issues through the provision of convenient access and smarter organization. The double layered Door-in-Door opens with the simple push of a button, revealing the surprisingly spacious mini compartment with unexpected ease. This makes it quick and easy to find and access essential items and sought-after snacks without the inconvenience of searching through the bowels of a refrigerator while holding a pot or food in one hand.
"A large capacity is not the only factor people consider when buying a refrigerator,” said Mr. Hyunwoo Jung, General Manager, Home Appliance Division, LG Electronics. “Smarter, more intuitive food organization is now a must due to today’s busy lifestyles. Our Door-in-Door provides users with easyaccess to the items they use the most and gives them the freedom to arrange things just the way they like it. Not only does the Door-in-Door save time, it also keeps cold air locked inside the refrigerator’s main compartment. We are continuing to receive industry recognition and consumer praise for this innovative and practical of features. LG is dedicated to making life easier and will always strive to deliver next-level convenience to its customers.”
LG's comprehensive survey found that, in most households, the refrigerator is opened approximately 80 times per day – often by family members looking for the same few items. The Door-in-Door feature makes it possible to find needed items without having to open the refrigerator’s main door. This reduces cold air loss from the central compartment by as much as 41 percent. As a result, the compressor doesn’t need to ramp up its efforts to maintain a steady temperature inside the fridge, thereby reducing the amount of cold air loss and increasing preservation performance. It also helps to cut down on spending at the supermarket by keeping food fresher for a longer period of time.
Inside the Door-in-Door, LG’s adjustable Moving Basket combines with a handy drawer section to enable customized organization configurations to suit a variety of lifestyles. Each member of the family can easily adjust the height of the different interior compartments according to their own needs. This flexibility separates the Door-in-Door from conventional fixed configuration fridges and helps users to design a storage system that works best for them. Meanwhile, the Mini Table, another of the fridge’s smart features, provides a convenient, flat surface that makes it possible for users to pour drinks while standing at the fridge without carrying heavy bottles to the dinning table.

All of this means that families can customize shelf space to match specific food sets and individual lifestyles. One area of the fridge might be reserved for organic ingredients, while others might be set up for sandwich materials, desserts and snacks, beverages, or a variety of other food categories. Because the Moving Basket enables compartment dimensions to be adjusted, families can easily find a configuration that matches their own specific needs. Of course, food types and lifestyles differ by region and within regions. The Door-in-Door is just as accommodating to East Asian consumers looking to set up an oriental medicine section in their fridge as it is to Northern European consumers who might want a dairy section or North American consumers who might like a section just for sports drinks and protein shakes.
LG is the industry leading manufacturer when it comes to incorporating an additional compartment within the fridge’s front door. The original Door-in-Door made its debut in South Korea in February 2010. The feature has since become a global market trend. In 2011, they were introduced to markets in North America, Asia and South and Central America, with launches in Oceania, the Middle East and Africa coming the following year. LG has sold over 1.4 million Door-in-Door refrigerators worldwide and continues to refine its celebrated double layered door.
jall the benefits the Door-in-Door offers, it’s no wonder the feature has been integrated into each of LG’s global refrigerator categories, including side-by-side, French-door, top freezer and bottom freezer refrigerators. The company has gone one step further this year; the remarkable Double Door-in-Door refrigerator, released in South Korea, puts one Door-in-Door on the right door and another on the left, adding a whole new level of convenience. Even better, consumers around the world will soon get a chance to experience this convenience since LG is planning to launch the Double Door-in-Door in additional markets around the globe.
Double Door-in-Door refrigerator is a great example of LG’s ongoing effort to make life better for consumers in diverse markets around the world. After creating the original Door-in-Door in 2010, the company has upgraded the feature each and every year to enhance convenience in more intuitive ways.

LG is committed to using the latest innovations to continually exceed consumer expectations and push the industry forward. This is also why the Door-in-Door refrigerator has received widespread international acclaim for its powerful performance capabilities and breakthrough technologies.
