68 New York Women Compete For Biggest Butt!! Title Of ‘Best Behind’

It is an irony of sorts that a contest to find the New York woman with the biggest buttocks would be used as a model for a cosmetic surgeon, while contest rules specify the contestants’ behind must be all-natural, no surgically enhanced ones allowed.

The organiser of the contest is celebrity cosmetic surgeon Dr Michael Jones, who owns Lexington Plastic Surgeons.

Besides the modeling contract at Drift Studio, the winner will receive $2,000 cash prize.

The New York Post reports that 68 women signed up. The contestants included Washington Heights model and dancer Brenda Monks, personal trainer Chelsea Simone and pre-school teacher from Queens Tammy Chrisphonte.

At the Saturday casting call, the aspirants for the title were asked why their behinds are their source of pride.

Twenty-year-old Darby Puckett from Virginia attributes her voluptuous backside to gymnastics and eating chicken biscuits from Hardee as well as the southern diet that gave her enough body fat in her booty.

At the end of the day, the finalists were whittled to 13 who would be crowned by the end of January.

The female reality star whose butt shot was the cover of Paper Magazine in November, which broke the Internet, didn’t join the contest.

Many females would consider the contestants lucky women for being blessed by nature with curvaceous derriere. For those lacking in that area, one alternative is the butt-enhancement procedure which would cost them $10,000 when done by a licenced cosmetic surgeon.

Despite the cost, buttock enhancement procedures in the US went up 58 percent in 2014, while 63,000 butt augmentation procedures were performed in Brazil in 2013, five times the number done in the US.

ISIS To Obama: 'We Will Cut Off Your Head In The White House'

ISIS militants have threatened to behead Obama in the White House in a video released on Jan. 26. 

The video shows ISIS militants standing in the streets of Mosul, Iraq's second largest city, following an artillery barrage on the city by Kurdish Peshmerga forces. In front of the militants is seated a Kurdish soldier who is executed at the end of the video. 

Prior to the Kurdish soldiers execution, the ISIS executioner delivered a message in Kurdish which was subtitled into Arabic in the video. 

"Know, oh Obama, that we will reach America. Know also that we will cut off your head in the White House and transform America into a Muslim province," the militant says  a ccording to a  translation by the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI).

The militant then continues his threat against other Western nations, saying "And this is my message to France and its sister, Belgium. We advise you that we will come to you with car bombs and explosive charges and we will cut off your heads."

The video appeared to be a response by ISIS against a multitude of setbacks it has faced in the past week. On Jan. 26, ISIS fighters withdrew from the Syrian-Kurdish city of Kobani after a failed four-month siege in which the militant group lost as many as 1,500 fighters. 

Simultaneously, the Kurdish Peshmerga forces have started conducting operations aimed at dislodging ISIS from Mosul, the crown-jewel of ISIS' reign in Iraq. Kurdish forces have launched rockets into Mosul in an attempt to target ISIS militants while US forces have regularly conducted airstrikes in the region outside the city. 

In retaliation for the strikes, the ISIS militants ended their video by executing the Kurdish soldier. 

The militants also included a warning for Kurdistan President Barzani: " This is one of your soldiers' fate, and every time you launch a missile, we will send you back the head of one of your soldiers."

TAKING impunity to a new level, some ex-Niger Delta militants, joined by some intemperate public officials, gathered in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, last week to declare war against Nigeria in advance, should President Goodluck Jonathan lose next month’s presidential election. While disdain for law and order is not totally unexpected from pardoned ex-insurgents, the participation of Governor Seriake Dickson and a presidential adviser, Kingsley Kuku, in that provocative conclave is doubly unacceptable and should warrant a response from the government.

The bravado was shocking. According to news reports, the ex-militants, featuring some ex-warlords, vowed to take up arms against the country if Jonathan lost the February 14 presidential election. They also threatened reprisals for attacks on the President’s campaign team and vehicles in some northern states. Asari Dokubo, who has repeatedly trodden this path, urged attendees to get ready for war: “This action is calling the Niger Delta youths to war.”

Like him, others, including Government Ekpemupolo, aka Tompolo, and Victor Ebikabowei, aka Boy Loaf, vowed to disrupt oil production. “If they take the power away from Jonathan, we will take our oil,” declared Ebikabowei. If the threats of persons who once violently resorted to self-help were disturbing, the benevolent presence of Dickson and Kuku was alarming.

Rather than moderate the extremism on display, Dickson, playing the amiable host, reportedly thanked the speakers for “backing the re-election of President Jonathan with greater vigour” and promised to relate their position to him. On his part, Kuku, the President’s Special Adviser on Niger Delta Affairs and Chairman of the Amnesty Implementation Committee, reportedly read the resolutions of the meeting, reiterating that the region’s youths would not take attacks on the President’s campaign entourage lightly.

If these reports are a true reflection of what transpired, Dickson’s and Kuku’s actions were simply treasonable. They have desecrated the high offices they occupy. Dickson imprudently provided the hallowed chambers of the Government House, Yenagoa, for the infamous meeting and lent the imprimatur of his exalted office to threats against the country and the 1999 Constitution that he solemnly swore to uphold.

Most offensive is the complete disregard for law and the electoral process. The militants did not hinge their angst on any universally acceptable present or future injustice to their preferred choice for president. Rather, they demonstrated utter disregard for the electoral process, vowing to declare war and disrupt oil production even if Jonathan lost in a free and fair contest.

This arrogance is insufferable and the rest of Nigeria should be concerned. First, leaders, elders, traditional authorities and even the youths of Ijawland, on whose behalf the incendiary threats were purportedly made, should come out to disclaim the preposterous provocation. It is an ill-wind that benefits no one, certainly not the 14 million population claimed by the Ijaw Foundation.

Jonathan should not play the ostrich on this one. The threat is too weighty to be ignored, especially with the presence of his aide, Kuku, at the meeting. He should not forget this statement that “nobody’s political ambition is worth the blood of any Nigerian.” Nigerians have risen as one against mindless, unprovoked violence or threats by any group. When misguided youths rampaged in some northern states after the 2011 presidential election, they received national and worldwide condemnation. His silence can only be interpreted as tacit agreement. Did he send Kuku to the meeting or was the adviser there in his personal capacity? No presidential adviser or state governor ought to be associated with such threats.

The central pillars of democracy are the rule of law and regular free and fair elections. Jonathan won one in 2011; he can remain in office for another four years only through another electoral victory. You neither go to war when your candidate loses an election nor declare war ahead of it.

The misguided militants forget that the votes of the Ijaw militants alone cannot secure election and Nigeria is a single constituency for an aspirant to the presidency. Jonathan won handily across the country in 2011. He fortuitously ascended the presidency, first, as Acting President, not by the actions of his kinsmen, who also played no role whatsoever in his nomination to the vice-presidency in 2007.

It is tragic that ex-militants, once accused of kidnapping, sabotage of oil facilities and killing of soldiers and policemen but were granted amnesty by the late President Umaru Yar’Adua, are once again threatening violence on the basis of a divine right to the Presidency. A media report published in February 2014 estimated that at least N260 billion was spent on ex-Niger Delta militants between 2009 and 2013 through amnesty payments and lucrative pipeline protection deals, while N35.8 billion was voted for ex-militants in 2014. Ekpemupolo’s company has been awarded a controversial multimillion dollar coastal protection contract just as Asari Dokubo, Ebikabowei and others also have been given contracts.

Thousands have received scholarships and monthly payouts.

Two years ago, Kuku had, during a visit to the United States, similarly threatened war if Jonathan was not returned to office in 2015. Asari Dokubo has been making the same threat for years with no response from the President. Nigerians can no longer accept silence from their President, whose then political adviser, Ahmed Gulak, reacting to yet another threat of violence from Asari Dokubo in 2013, said the ex-militant was merely expressing his own opinion.

The militants make no pretence to being well-armed. In any case, their security contracts enable them to legally procure sophisticated weapons, funded by the taxpayer, and immense wealth to buy more outside official channels.

The inaction of the Department of State Service and the police is baffling, but may not be unconnected with their reading of the president’s body language. Jonathan should not allow his ambition and supporters to plunge Nigeria into a blood-soaked crisis. The security agencies should shun partisanship and do their duty to the state by taking counter-measures against any violent threats to the country.

War threat: Danjuma calls for Dokubo, Tompolo’s arrest

A former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (retd.), has called for the arrest of an ex-Niger Delta militants, including Mujahideen   Dokubo-Asari and Government Ekpudomenowei(akaTompolo)   for   threatening to declare war against the nation if President Goodluck loses the February 14 election.

Danjuma, who described the threat as “unguarded and reckless,” warned that “miscreants” must not be allowed to hold the country by the jugular.

Dokubo-Asari, had at a meeting on Friday at the Bayelsa State Government House, Yenagoa, urged an end to what he termed, the intimidation of the Ijaw by other Nigerians.

“For every Goliath, God created a David. For every Pharaoh, there is a Moses. We are going to war. Every one of you should go and fortify yourself,” he said.

At the meeting were Governor Seriake Dickson, Ekpudomenowei, Victor Ebikabowei (aka Boy Loaf), the   Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta Affairs, Kingsley Kuku and the   President General, the Ijaw Youth Council, Udengs Eradiri.

Boyloaf also said at the meeting that if the North succeeded in regaining power on February 14,   the people of the Niger Delta would take their oil back.

However, Danjuma while inaugurating the Kwankwasiyya City alongside   Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, on Wednesday wondered why Dokubo-Asari and Ebikabowei were heating up the polity.

He reminded them that since Nigeria and its resources belonged to everyone,   no one   must hold the government to ransom.

The former Defence minister, therefore, urged the necessary government agencies to immediately arrest the ex-militants.

“You should arrest Asari Dokubo, Tompolo, Boyloaf and other Niger Delta militants for making reckless statements, which in any way does not mean keeping Nigeria as one entity. They   create a war situation.

“Those were reckless statements coming from irresponsible individuals; they should be condemned and   arrested immediately,” he said.

In a situation like this, the issue of entrenching peace in the country is what is needed most. We should not allow some miscreants to hold us to ransom,” he said.

Danjuma, who served as a Defence minister during the Olusegun Obasanjo administration, added,   “Nigeria belongs to everybody and we must do everything possible to safeguard her unity.”

He also asked politicians to stop making utterances capable of overheating the polity.

The former minister said, “As we are approaching election time, we must strive to ensure that important issues are thoroughly discussed but not personalities. We want to have a perfect election where no one would have an axe to grind with anybody.

“Once   politicians base their campaigns on issues not personalities and avoid anything capable of causing disaffection, I am confident that we would have foul-free elections.”

He commended Kwankwaso for providing physical infrastructure in the last four years and described the Kwankwasiyya City as one of the modern edifices in the current democratic dispensation.

Nigerians arrested on gay wedding says "It was my birthday party''

                      

"It was my birthday party, not a gay wedding," 18-year-old Faruk Maiduguri, told reporters at the Hisbah offices that he and his friends were only celebrating his birthday.

The Islamic law-enforcement agency, the Hisbah, said on Tuesday

"We have 12 men in custody, including the bride. We arrested them at the venue of a planned gay wedding," Daurawa told AFP.

"We got information of the wedding four days earlier and our men stormed the venue while the wedding was about to start."

Many guests escaped during the raid, he added.

Daurawa said the suspects, who came from Kano, Maiduguri, Kaduna, Bauchi,  Ibadan and Osogbo  "looked and acted feminine", which prompted their arrest.

Some of them were discharged while others were released on bail.

Nigeria's Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act carries penalties of up to 14 years in jail for anyone confirmed to be in a gay union.

Lil Wayne Fighting BirdMan And sues Cash Money for $51 Million

It's not news that former best friends and business partners Lil Wayne and Birdman have fallen out over money, record deals, and artists under their label. What's new now is that the rapper is suing Cash Money for $51million with the hopes of ending his contract with the label.

According to TMZ, Lil Wayne filed a lawsuit asking a judge to end his contract with Cash Money. According to the lawsuit, Wayne says Birdman and company violated the deal by withholding tens of millions of dollars Cash Money owes him for his long-delayed album, "Tha Carter V."

Wayne claims because Cash Money is refusing to pay, he's entitled to walk. But Lil Wayne wants more than just a declaration of freedom. He's suing for $51 MILLION. 

And Wayne wants the judge to declare he's the joint copyright owner of all Young Money recordings ... which includes Drake, Nicki Minaj and several others.

Sources connected to Wayne tell TMZ ... if Birdman antes up then he can release "Tha Carter V," but only if Wayne gets paid. Wayne says he was supposed to get an $8 million advance when he began recording in December, 2013 and another 2M when he completed the album a year later, but so far he's gotten nothing.

Update: Lil Wayne to Birdman - I'm willing to stay if the price is right

Lil Wayne will stay with Cash Money and Birdman IF they ante up the money he's owed ... in fact, we're told if Cash Money antes up, Wayne has no choice but to stay.

Sources involved in the case tell TMZ ... Wayne feels Birdman's decision to avoid paying him is nothing more than a power play. TMZ broke the story that Wayne is suing, and a central claim is that Birdman has consistently stiffed him over the last year.

There are 2 payments that have irked Wayne -- he says he was owed $8 million when he went into the studio to record "Tha Carter V" in December 2013, and another $2 mil when he completed the album last month.

We're told the hope is that Universal -- which distributes Cash Money records -- will step in and earmark the $10 mil for Wayne. And we're told Universal is already putting pressure on Cash Money to settle.

If Cash Money pays Wayne the $10 mil, it would essentially eliminate any breach of contract. That means Wayne would have no legal basis to ask out of the contract. Even though Wayne's suing for $51 million, most of that is predicated on future lost profits which would not be an issue if they settle.

As for the release of "Tha Carter V" ... even if the case settles the power would be in Birdman's claws.

Terrorism: US ignores Nigeria to work with Chad, Cameroon

Major rift between the Nigerian and American military authorities have been hampering the fight against Boko Haram militants, which have been carrying out murderous attacks on villages and towns in the North-East, the New York Times reports.

Relations between American military trainers and specialists advising the Nigerian military in the fight against Boko Haram are so strained that the Pentagon often bypasses Nigeria altogether, choosing to work instead with security officials in the neighbouring countries of Chad, Cameroon and Niger, NY Times quoted defence officials and diplomats as saying.

Following the strain in relationship, the Federal Government in December 2014 cancelled the last stage of American training of a newly-created Nigerian Army battalion and there has been no resumption of the training since then.

This was against the backdrop of the refusal of the US to sell Cobra attack helicopters and other lethal weapons to the Federal Government to combat the Boko Haram insurgency, saying the army could not maintain them.

US Secretary of State John Kerry, scheduled to travel to Nigeria on Sunday, is expected to discuss the security issue and the forthcoming elections with President Goodluck Jonathan when they meet in Lagos.

The NY Times reports that American officials are hesitant to share intelligence with the Nigerian military because they contend it has been infiltrated by Boko Haram.

It said that the US was so concerned about Boko Haram infiltration that American officials had not included raw data in intelligence they had provided Nigeria, worried that their sources would be compromised.

The officials are also said to be wary of the Nigerian military as well, citing corruption and sweeping human rights abuses by its soldiers.

“We don’t have a foundation for what I would call a good partnership right now,” said a senior military official with the US Africa Command, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak publicly on the matter.

“We want a relationship based on trust, but you have to be able to see yourself. And they’re in denial,” the official said.

Senator Ahmed Zanna said it was disappointing that the US would bypass Nigeria to work with smaller countries on terrorism.

“For a small country like Chad or Cameroon to come to assist the Americans, that is disappointing. You have a very good and reliable ally and you are running away from them,” he said, faulting the Nigerian government.

“It is terrible. I pray for a change of government,” he added.

A British diplomat noted that the frustration between the two sides (Nigeria and US) has broad implications for the fight against Boko Haram, including making it harder for other international partners who have joined the effort.

“We are trying to work closely with the French and the Americans in support of the Nigerian military and government against Boko Haram, a rift between one of our two partners and the Nigerian government is not a good thing,” the diplomat stated.

Nigeria’s Boko Haram Threatens to Expand Attacks in Africa

The Nigerian Islamist militant group Boko Haram released a new video threatening to attack more African countries after leaders on the continent agreed to form a joint force to fight the insurgents.
“You will see what we will do to you,” Abubakar Shekau, Boko Haram’s leader, said in a 36-minute unverified video posted on YouTube, making reference to leaders from Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria. “African leaders you are too late if you start attacking me now.”
The African Union, at a meeting of representatives from 13 countries in Niamey, the capital of Niger, backed plans by a number of states to form a joint force to battle Boko Haram. Chad has deployed troops to assist in fighting the group in Cameroon. Boko Haram has unleashed a violent campaign since 2009 to impose Islamic law in Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy.

“Given the poor history of information sharing and general mistrust between these countries, major coordinated operations involving Nigerian, Cameroonian and Chadian forces targeting Boko Haram’s operational bases and positions are unlikely to take place in the immediate term,” Poole, U.K.-based security consultancy Drum Cussac said in an e-mailed report.
In the video, Shekau claimed responsibility for attacks this month that razed the northeastern Nigerian town of Baga. Carrying an AK-47 rifle and flanked by masked fighters and Hilux trucks with mounted machine guns, Shekau said the group had confiscated military hardware at the multinational military base in the town.

“These weapons you are seeing, we got them from Baga’s military base,” Shekau said, before firing his automatic rifle into the air.
Nigeria’s military has repeatedly claimed to have killed Shekau, and in October the authorities said they had agreed a cease-fire with Boko Haram. Since then, violence in the north of Africa’s most populous nation has continued unabated.
The attacks in Baga near the border with Chad provoked international condemnation with United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon saying he was “appalled” by the raids. Reports that as many as 2,000 people died in the assaults are unfounded, Nigeria’s military said, with initial evidence showing the death toll didn’t exceed 150.
“The fall of Baga and the massacre of hundreds of its residents in early January have further reinforced the perception that the Boko Haram insurgency was becoming increasingly regional,” said Drum Cussac. “Baga’s strategic location along the shores of Lake Chad would allow the Islamist outfit to escalate and intensify cross-border attacks against targets in Chad and Niger.”
The violence in the Nigeria’s northeast also threatens to disrupt voting in the nation’s presidential election, scheduled for Feb. 14.

Boko Haram killed 4,740 people last year, more than double in 2013, according to estimates by Bath, England-based risk consultancy, Verisk Maplecroft.
The video is the latest in a series released by the militant group, which only communicates via posting the footage on the Internet or sending it to local reporters.
Shekau earlier this month expressed support for the attackers who killed 12 people at the Paris office of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and threatened Cameroon’s President Paul Biya, whose armed forces have intensified their campaign against the rebels’ cross-border incursions.

LISBON, Portugal (AP) — Portugal and Real Madrid soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo confirmed Tuesday he has broken up with his longtime girlfriend, Russian model Irina Shayk.

"After dating for five years, my relationship with Irina Shayk has come to an end," Ronaldo said in a written statement sent exclusively to The Associated Press. "We believed it would be best for both of us to take this step now."

Ronaldo said he was making the statement to end speculation about their relationship, and to end recent rumors about his private life. He did not specify the rumors, but media in Portugal have reported that Shayk fell out with members of Ronaldo's family, and that he was seeing another woman.

"I wish Irina the greatest happiness," Ronaldo said.

He gave no further details in the brief statement.

The couple, both 29, has had huge international success, and their relationship has featured in newspapers and magazines worldwide. They were not believed to be living together, as Ronaldo was based in the Spanish capital while Shayk traveled extensively.

Ronaldo recently picked up the Ballon d'Or after being voted the world's best player, but Shayk did not accompany him to the ceremony in Zurich. Her absence triggered rumors that their relationship was over. The couple remained silent despite days of intense media speculation.

Ronaldo retained football's highest individual honor after scoring 61 goals last year. His record tally of 17 in a Champions League season helped Madrid win an unprecedented 10th European Cup title.

Born in the Portuguese island of Madeira, Ronaldo played as a teenager for Sporting Lisbon before moving to Manchester United in 2003. He transferred to Real Madrid in 2009, building his reputation and his wealth through endorsements and sponsorships. He has millions of followers on social media.

Ronaldo has a 4-year-old son, called Cristiano Junior, but he has never disclosed the mother's identity.

Shayk won international fame as a Sports Illustrated swimsuit model, and a lingerie model. She made her acting debut last year opposite Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in the film "Hercules."

World’s newest airliner begins first commercial flight

DOHA, Qatar (AP) — The world’s newest jetliner, the Airbus A350, took to the skies Thursday carrying its first paying passengers from the Gulf Arab nation of Qatar.
 

For passengers, the new plane offers wider panoramic windows and larger overhead storage space plus the ability to limit connections.

The A350 is the third — and final — major new aircraft in a decade. First there was the double-decker Airbus A380, which debuted in October 2007. It’s the world’s largest passenger jet, designed to carry up to 525 passengers between some of the largest cities on the planet.

Then came the lightweight Boeing 787, which carried its first passengers in October 2011. Thanks to its lower operating costs, the jet, marketed by Boeing as the Dreamliner, has led to new nonstop flights between cities that previously didn’t have enough passengers to merit such service.
As with the Dreamliner, the A350’s lightweight design allows it to burn significantly less fuel than other jets of similar size. A little more than half of the structure is made of composite materials such as plastic reinforced by carbon fibers. Add in titanium and advanced aluminum alloys and more than 70 percent of the plane is made up of lightweight materials.
Airbus says the A350 will help open up nonstop routes like Shanghai to Boston, Massachusetts or Paris to Santiago, Chile.
The A350 can fly 276 to 369 passengers, depending on the variant and the airline’s choice of seating configuration.
Qatar’s version is fitted out with 36 business class seats that turn into fully flat beds and boast 17-inch TV screens, and an economy class section with 247 seats, with smaller TVs.
The state-backed airline has put considerable faith in the new model, with orders for 79 more planes. It received its first double-decker A380 from the European plane maker in September.
“The delivery of this new aircraft category into the Qatar Airways’ fleet … is a moment of absolute national pride for Qatar Airways and the state of Qatar,” Qatar Airways CEO Akbar al-Baker said at an inauguration ceremony last week.



Qatar Airways’ larger Gulf rival, the Dubai-based Emirates, also had plans to operate the A350. But it scrapped an order for 70 of the planes last June after what it said was a “fleet requirement” review.
Unlike the Dreamliner, which was grounded in early 2013 for three and a half months because of problems with its lithium-ion batteries, Airbus — at this point — has decided to forego lithium-ion technology on the A350 in favor of traditional, but heavier, batteries.
So far, Boeing has secured more orders for its 787, but the program had a head start on Airbus, which was focusing on its colossal A380.

Boeing has 1,071 orders for its 787, with 228 of the jets now in service around the world. Airbus has 778 orders for the A350 from 41 different airlines and jet leasing companies including, British Airways, China Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines and United Airlines. The plane that flew to Frankfurt Thursday is the first of 80 such jets quickly-growing Qatar has ordered.

A larger version of the jet, which is scheduled to start flying in 2017, aims to compete with Boeing’s long-range 777-300.

During an interview with Power 105’s The Breakfast Club yesterday, Singer Jordin Spark, who split from Jason Derulo in July 2014, revealed that he broke up with her and never said a word to her again! She said she didn't even know they were officially broken up when he decided to call it quits.

Jordin said after a big argument one day, Jason left the house they shared. She said she'd apologized to him before he left, so she assumed everything was fine. After she didn't hear from him for several hours, she called his phone but he never responded. She said she kept calling him but he never called back or contact her for a long time. Then she sent him a text and told him to get his things out of her house (he was living with her). She said he came and got his things and that was the last time she heard from him.


About the car that Jason said he bought for her and wanted back, Jordin said she did get a BMW as a gift from him but later found out that he leased the vehicle. She said she took the car back to BMW dealership and bought herself a brand new Jeep for her birthday (which she showed off on Instagram - above). She said no hard feeling, she wishes him well and said he isn’t a bad guy.

Ebola Outbreak in West Africa Slowing Down – SAYS UN

An outbreak of Ebola that has claimed over 8,400 lives in West Africa appeared to be slowing down, the UN special envoy on Ebola said on Friday.

“The change in behaviour that we’ve been hoping for, working for, anticipating, is now happening everywhere.
“The facilities to treat people are available everywhere.
“Safe burial teams are providing safe and dignified burial services everywhere and the result is that we’re seeing the beginning of the outbreak slowing down,’’ David Nabarro told newsmen.

Nabarro declined to predict when the outbreak of the virus could be definitively over.

The hemorrhagic fever is spread through contact with bodily fluids of infected people or the highly contagious body of someone who has died of the virus.

Nabarro said burial practices that involved people touching and cleaning bodies of Ebola victims had helped fuel the outbreak.

“It is an incredible drop, a remarkable collective change in patterns of behaviour.

“Liberia had come to terms with the reality that the outbreak of Ebola is being driven by the way in which people behave,’’ Nabarro said.

More than 3,500 of the 8,400 dead were from Liberia.

Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea now have capacity to quickly set up mobile centres to handle localised outbreaks.
He said the U.S., British and French military, which built treatment centres, had played a crucial role.

“This external help was absolutely vital in bolstering and supporting the capacity of the people in the country to make the changes,’’ Nabarro said.

According to the World Health Organisation, the worst Ebola outbreak on record infected about 21,200 people in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea since it was detected in March.

The government of Liberia had earlier said that it could be free of the virus by the end of February after success in curbing transmission.

It said the country had only 10 confirmed Ebola cases as of Jan. 12.

Police authorities in Belgium have foiled what they have described as “a jihadist plot to stage a major attack.”

The suspected terrorists and officers were engaged in a fierce gun battle that led to the death of two of the suspects in eastern Belgium on Thursday evening, Guardian UK reports.

“This operation stopped a major terrorist attack from taking place. You could say a second potential Paris has been averted,” said federal prosecutor Eric Van Der Sypt.

Other pre-emptive raids were carried out in other parts of Belgium, as part of the government’s efforts to remain vigilant and aware of any potential terror threats.

Jimi Agbaje Promises To Scrap Lekki-epe Tollgate

 
THE governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State, Mr. Jimi Agbaje, has promised to cancel the controversial Lekki-Epe tollgate, if elected into office.

Speaking during an interactive session with the Muslim community in Lagos yesterday, Agbaje hinged his plan to cancel the Lekki-Epe tollgate on the fact that the tollgate is untenable, as it is standing on an existing road.

The PDP governorship candidate however, disclosed that the tool on the Lekki Phase 1 inner bridge would remain, in view of the fact that the construction of the bridge started from scratch by the concessionaire company.

Agbaje, who was accompanied by his Deputy, Alhaja Safurat Abdulkareem, commended Governor Babatunde Fashola for some of the successes recorded in the state but he averred that Lagos was in urgent need of change and not continuity.

He also assured his Muslim hosts, who included the National Missioner of the Ansar-ud-Deen Society of Nigeria, Sheik Abdurahman Ahmad, that the problem of allowing Muslim children to wear the hijab veil to school would be solved through a synergy between the state and the mosque.

Meanwhile, former Governor of Lagos State and National leader of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the incumbent governor of the state, Babatunde Fashola yesterday urged Lagosians to be wary of the activities of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) so as not to associate with “failure”.

The duo who spoke at the flag-off of the Lagos APC campaign rally which took place at Archbishop Vinning Memorial Church Open Ground, GRA, Ikeja likened PDP to a political Ebola, saying associating with them will bring nothing good for Lagos and the country in general.

The party leaders took turn to lambast the Federal Government and PDP for poor leadership, saying the nation’s economy has gone from bad to worse since Jonathan came to power.

In the same vein, the APC national leader also accused PDP gubernatorial candidate in Lagos State, Jimi Agbaje of impatience, saying his impatience has led him to a dead end.

U.S Supports Nigeria Election in Spite of the insurgency in the country.

The U.S. State Department on Wednesday said Nigeria’s election in February could be a factor behind the sharp increase in attacks by Boko Haram Islamist militants in the north of the country.

Spokeswoman Marie Harf said, however, that the Feb. 14 presidential election should go ahead in spite of the violence which has forced about 20,000 Nigerians to flee to neighbouring countries in recent weeks.

“There has been a sharp escalation in the number of reported casualties.

“We do believe the election is a factor,’’ Harf told a daily briefing.

Harf said Boko Haram previously used events such as elections to stir up tensions.

However, the election is expected to be a close contest between President Goodluck Jonathan and his leading challenger, Muhammadu Buhari.

“Boko Haram has tended to, particularly around something like an election, use political issues or sensitivities to try to en flame tensions.

“We have seen that as one of their tactics and that is why it is so important to move forward with the election, because we believe it is important,’’ she noted.

Boko Haram’s insurgency began in 2009, but the number and scale of the attacks has risen sharply since 2015 after the government imposed emergency rule in three worst-hit states in northern Nigeria.

Amnesty International has said Boko Haram may have killed some 2,000 people around Jan. 3 in Baga in northern Nigeria.

However, Harf said it was hard to independently verify that figure.

The rise of Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), the Islamist militant group that has seized a chunk of land stretching from northern Syria to central Iraq, has struck fear into the hearts of leaders around the world. CNN explains ISIS' roots, what it controls, and where its support comes from.

The group began in 2004 as al Qaeda in Iraq, before rebranding as ISIS two years later. It was an ally of -- and had similarities with -- Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda: both were radical anti-Western militant groups devoted to establishing an independent Islamic state in the region. But ISIS -- unlike al Qaeda, which disowned the group in early 2014 -- has proven to be more brutal and more effective at controlling territory it has seized.

ISIS is putting governing structures in place to rule the territories the group conquers once the dust settles on the battlefield. From the cabinet and the governors to the financial and legislative bodies, ISIS' bureaucratic hierarchy looks a lot like those of some of the Western countries whose values it rejects -- if you take away the democracy and add in a council to consider who should be beheaded.

Oil and land: What ISIS controls

The group seized control of Mosul, Iraq's second-largest city, this summer. But its power base is in Raqqa, eastern Syria, where ISIS is now in control of more than half of Syria's oil assets -- along with a number of oil fields in Iraq -- according to energy expert Luay al-Khateeb. Al-Khateeb says the oil is finding its way to the black market and could be making ISIS up to $3 million each day.

More than 11,000 people have traveled from abroad to fight in Syria and Iraq, officials suggest, although some have gone back home again. They align themselves with different factions, and sometimes change loyalties as groups merge, disband or change allegiances. Naturally, countries with bigger Muslim populations tend to send the largest number of fighters.

But some nations with relatively small Muslim populations have sent a disproportionately large number of jihadis. Finland, Ireland and Australia have the highest number of foreign fighters per capita, although Finnish security officials say a minority of Finns in their count went for humanitarian reasons.
