Federal High Court sitting in Benin, Edo State yesterday reserved ruling in the N25billion money laundering and abuse of office charge brought against Micheal Igbinedion and Charles Eboigbodin by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, for January 30, 2015.

Justice J. Liman on Friday November 14, 2014, fixed the January 30 date for judgement after the adoption of written addresses by counsel: Rotimi Jacob SAN for the prosecution and Mike Ozekhome SAN, Ricky Tafa SAN and Barr. Richard O. Ahonaruogo for the accused persons

 The accused persons along with their companies: Gava Corporation Limited; Romrig Nigeria Limited; PML Securities Company Limited and PML Nigeria Limited, were arraigned by the anti- graft agency on a 81-count charge bothering on Money Laundering, Misappropriation of funds, conspiracy and Abuse of office.

While addressing the court, Jacobs hinged his submission on the testimonies of prosecution witnesses which, according to him, corroborated the charge, with emphasis on the several public funds deposited into private accounts, and how government funds were used to repay loans collected by former governor Lucky Igbinedion while he was in office. 

Jacobs then prayed the court to "accept the prosecution’s case as presented and convict the accused persons as charged".
But before closing his address, the prosecuting counsel called the attention of the court to the inability of the bailiff to serve the summon earlier issued by it on the former Edo State governor, who failed to present himself in court, after the Appeal Court decision in April, asking him to return to the High Court for trial.
Jacobs disclosed that all efforts by the bailiff to serve Lucky Igbinedion with the summon, met a brick wall as  he was always turned back from the gate by security men who told him on all occasions that Igbinedion was out of town.

The EFCC counsel then prayed the court to permit a substituted service of the summon on the last known address of Igbinedion.
"May I apply that the first accused person be served by allowing the prosecution paste the notice at the known address,” he said.

But Justice Liman advised the prosecuting counsel to make an application. According to him, "the summon has expired, you can reapply or ask for a substituted service as there are other means of service. Prosecution must make another application."

In the latest of many attempts at blackmailing SaharaReporters into silence, a new (what else?) website has concocted the story that the All Progressives Congress (APC) bought and gave me a mansion located in Atherton, California.
 
Everyone around the world knows that Nigerian governments since 2006 have been trying to shut down or shut up SaharaReporters. Technical efforts to shut us down occur almost every week. Efforts to shut us up are no less prevalent, and they include blackmail from various directions.

The Atherton mansion claim, which was apparently written by some handlers of President Goodluck Jonathan, followed renewed attacks on the site infrastructure during the summer. The well-oiled and well-heeled team sent bots after our server and crippled it for several days. Shortly after we restored our services, that criminal team went on Facebook to create several fake fan pages in our name.  It was only three weeks ago that we succeeded in getting Facebook to take down the biggest of those fan pages; by that time, it had garnered over 14,000 likes.

In this latest attempt, Mr. Jonathan’s hit squad seems to have gone berserk over an online poll conducted by SaharaReporters, which showed that he would be defeated by 75% if retired General Muhammad Buhari, was pitched against him in the 2015 general election. 

Following Mr. Jonathan’s declaration of intent earlier this week, our team of reporters also reported that a team affiliated with the Nigerian ruler refused to pay several persons who had been hired to pose as supporters during his presidential declaration in Abuja. The presidency seems widely embarrassed at the report that hordes of those in attendance at what was supposed to be a massively-supported declaration had in fact been hoodwinked by his Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria (TAN).

These reports and many others unveil the government as tactless, clueless and corrupt, but that is only because it is tactless, clueless and corrupt.  They are not manufactured, and unlike some others, we have refused to be bought off the task of reporting what we know. 
The truth is that my team and I are beyond bribery machineries.  Mr. Jonathan’s foot soldiers, who have repeatedly been sent to meet with us individually with the promise of huge bribes can attest to this.  For those amazed by the latest gossip about the $5m mansion bribe in the United States, I challenge the writers to publicly provide the verifiable address of the mansion in Atherton.  They should also go ahead and publish the real estate documents that are associated with the property, so that we can put the matter in the hands of the law-enforcement authorities. 
But we all know the truth: desperation.

It is desperation that is responsible for the concoction of this $5 million mansion story, the objective of which is to fool the simple-minded.  And we understand: the 2015 elections are approaching.  Time to buy off—or discourage—critics and unfavorable reporting.

But we at SaharaReporters are not fickle fighters. Nobody gave us a $5m home in 2009 when we were at the hub of relentlessly reporting on the cabal in Abuja that was preventing the Vice-President of Nigeria from taking office when his boss was sick.

That VP was Goodluck Jonathan, and that is how he became president.  We reported only as we saw fit, because we hold the constitution and the democracy of Nigeria to be superior to any Nigerian, including the President.  When Mr. Jonathan became Acting President, and then President, we did not expect him to thank us either, even though he sent one of his aides with loads of cash to New York on a "thank you" tour. 

We refused to meet with them on that occasion and reminded them that we were merely doing our duty in defense of Nigeria and her people.

It was not personal at that time. It is not personal today. 
That is why I again assure all supporters, readers and fans of the multimedia platform known as Sahara Reporters Media that we will continue to expose the rot that is perpetuated and perpetrated by the Jonathan government as long as that character does not change.  It is not personal.

Blackmail will not deter us from doing right by our people.  And neither phantom mansions nor private jets loaded with dollar bills can buy us off this duty.

I have been quite tardy to come back to you.  I can remember. I served you no letter of divorce, so there's nothing in-between us. In simple words, we still have a relationship. Let me say the truth: I am someone who's excited at the growth of someone else. So as i watch Solomon Elusoji (who shares this back page with me) grow at what he does with his STORYLINE, i became trapped and lost in my lust for his work.

His writings are so captivating and his STORYLINE makes me feel like am always on Broadway in Time Square, New York. Yes, I am back now and it will be every fortnight between us.

Last week, I returned from the United States where I followed the campaign trail of the American politicians and their political parties in the just concluded midterm elections.

Undoubtedly, as a country and as a people we have so much to learn from the democratic experience of America. The tenet of free speech that is the hallmark of the American society was at the centre all through the campaign period. That is one thing that is a major problem in our political circuit. We have seen a wave of violence in our politics this year alone, just because of intolerance among our politicians. The politics of fire and brimstone that is the hallmark of our society needs to be done with by taking a look at the American politics.

I am not saying that the political system in the United States is all perfect, because it does have its issues of ‘dark money’ and district drawings that impact on the outcome of their own elections. However, we have so much to learn on how the process has evolved to such a level where no violence is heard in American politics and the ‘dark money’ is not used to bribe a judge for an injunction or as a hand-out to people to vote with regards to ‘stomach infrastructure.’

At this time, when President Goodluck Jonathan faces heavy criticism for his policies, principally from the opposition parties, it is not a different scenario in America where President Barack Obama’s popularity sags. But how are President Obama and his aides responding to criticism in comparison to what comes out from Aso Rock in the face of anti-Jonathan campaigns? That is where the difference is clear. 

Last Tuesday, when the midterm election was over and Obama got the boot as shown in the result of the election, he simply said: “Americans, I heard you.”  In Nigeria, that will be a strange thing to say. The president and his party will rather go and hire lawyers with tax payers’ money to do abracadabra to overturn the election, they will give money to judges and they will hire ‘forensick’ experts to do their bidding.

Of course, the youths will be mobilised unto the streets with police protection to start causing damage to property owned by the opponents, with physical attacks on their lives as well. Where do we go from here?

And this, while the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal was defecting from his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the opposition, All Progressives Congress (APC), exactly two weeks ago, the American politics was experiencing similar situation, though not in terms of defection, but President Obama had become a lame duck to most of the candidates campaigning on the Democrats tickets for the midterm election. So they tried so much to distance themselves from Obama.

But that didn’t make Obama to call for the heads of the candidates as would have happened in our own politics. Can any PDP governor or senator distance him/herself from President Jonathan while campaigning for election? 

In Nigeria, that is a difficult thing to do. Any candidate who dares to distance him/herself from the leader of his party based on policies will be in soup.

An Igbo man will say Tufiakwa (abomination). In clear terms, that will be tantamount to committing political suicide or what the pundits call political hara-kiri.  But there was no political elimination in America when several gubernatorial and senatorial candidates pointedly told Obama not visit their states to campaign for them in the most recent American elections.

To be sure, there were ads on televisions from some Democratic Party candidates separating themselves from Obama policies and hell was not let loose.  In Kentucky, the Political Director for the Democratic Party, Christian Motely told me that campaign for state elections are done differently in United States. “If you are running a campaign, you do go for what is popular. Views are different from across the region and you need to gauge the temperature of your community to draft a campaign,” he said.

Now that the election is over and Democrats lost more states and Republicans made gains, everybody gets back to one another and they are looking forward to thanksgiving on November 27. Everybody knows that you have to do what you have to do to get your votes. That is the level where our politics and politicians need to get to in this country.

The idea of killing your opponents to have your way should be discarded and the idea of bribing the judges to get injunction must come to an end and of course the intolerance for free speech should be a thing of the past.

Let me say that as we roll into our own election next year, decorum should be the watchword for the politicians.
I can never forget what Professor Al Cross, a long-time political reporter and the director of the Institute for Rural Journalism and Community Issues at the University of Kentucky, told me when I visited him in his office on Thursday, October 30.  “You must be careful when reacting to a negative advertisement, because you may end up confirming the words of the ads and thus become a victim of your own judgement.”

Suicide Bomber Kills 6 in Kano...NIGERIA

A suicide bomber friday detonated a bomb hidden in his car at a filling station on Maiduguri Road, Kano, killing five others including three policemen in the process.

Scores of people were also injured at the Magarshiku Filling Station located opposite the NNPC Mega Station in Hotoro area, on the outskirts of Kano.
An eyewitness, Aliyu Yusuf said: “I heard a big bang near my residence and before I realised what was happening, I heard my neighbours saying it was a bomb explosion.”

A combined team of soldiers and policemen raced to the scene and condoned off the area, while the usually-busy area became deserted as traders and passersby rushed into their houses for safety.
The Police Commissioner, Kano State Command, Mr. Aderenle Shinaba confirmed the casualty figure to reporters at the scene of the explosion.

He said the bomber queued alongside other customers inside the filling station pretending to be buying fuel, before detonating the apparently bomb-laden vehicle.

Shinaba urged people in the state to be vigilant at all time by reporting any suspicious persons or object to security agents, “which will help to curtail the activities of the terrorists.”

Some of the injured were taken to Murtala Mohammed Specialists Hospital, in the city for treatment.

Local hunters kill over 70 Boko Haram insurgents, recapture Adamawa town

At least 75 Boko Haram militants were killed by local hunters in Maiha Local Government area of Adamawa State, residents of the area have said.

Maiha town, which is about 25 kilometers from Mubi town that was captured about two weeks ago, and about 200km from Yola the state capital, has now been recovered from the insurgents.

Maiha fell into the hands of  Boko Haram insurgents in a fierce battle with the Nigerian troops on Monday.

Sources say local hunters ambushed the insurgents and killed them in their dozens.

“The hunters mobilized and gave the insurgents hot chase during which many Boko Haram sect members are killed,” Bello Ya’u, a resident of Maiha, said. ‘’We commend them for the gallant fight.”

Corroborating, Baba Dauda, a local hunter told PREMIUM TIMES that the hunters made up their minds to fight because the insurgents had been maiming too many people.

“We had to wake up  and fight the bastards that keep plaguing our societies killing innocents souls.

“People should brace up and start fighting them, we killed many of them. We are not afraid of being killed,” he added.

Following the attack, some residents of Maiha now fear reprisal attacks and are moving in droves to the capital of Adamawa, Yola.

The state co-ordinator of Civilian Joint Task Force, Bako  Goni,  said over 2,000 people, including youth vigilantes, local hunters, retired military, police and para-military operatives, artisans and petty traders have signed up to confront Boko Haram insurgents in the  state.

Mr. Goni said the volunteers resolved to use dane guns, sticks, bows and arrows to confront the insurgents, thereby complementing the efforts of  Nigerian soldiers fighting the terrorists.

The insurgents have taken over many towns and villages in Adamawa State, including Madagali, Michika, Mubi North, Mubi South and many others.
