U.S Supports Nigeria Election in Spite of the insurgency in the country.

The U.S. State Department on Wednesday said Nigeria’s election in February could be a factor behind the sharp increase in attacks by Boko Haram Islamist militants in the north of the country.

Spokeswoman Marie Harf said, however, that the Feb. 14 presidential election should go ahead in spite of the violence which has forced about 20,000 Nigerians to flee to neighbouring countries in recent weeks.

“There has been a sharp escalation in the number of reported casualties.

“We do believe the election is a factor,’’ Harf told a daily briefing.

Harf said Boko Haram previously used events such as elections to stir up tensions.

However, the election is expected to be a close contest between President Goodluck Jonathan and his leading challenger, Muhammadu Buhari.

“Boko Haram has tended to, particularly around something like an election, use political issues or sensitivities to try to en flame tensions.

“We have seen that as one of their tactics and that is why it is so important to move forward with the election, because we believe it is important,’’ she noted.

Boko Haram’s insurgency began in 2009, but the number and scale of the attacks has risen sharply since 2015 after the government imposed emergency rule in three worst-hit states in northern Nigeria.

Amnesty International has said Boko Haram may have killed some 2,000 people around Jan. 3 in Baga in northern Nigeria.

However, Harf said it was hard to independently verify that figure.

The rise of Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), the Islamist militant group that has seized a chunk of land stretching from northern Syria to central Iraq, has struck fear into the hearts of leaders around the world. CNN explains ISIS' roots, what it controls, and where its support comes from.

The group began in 2004 as al Qaeda in Iraq, before rebranding as ISIS two years later. It was an ally of -- and had similarities with -- Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda: both were radical anti-Western militant groups devoted to establishing an independent Islamic state in the region. But ISIS -- unlike al Qaeda, which disowned the group in early 2014 -- has proven to be more brutal and more effective at controlling territory it has seized.

ISIS is putting governing structures in place to rule the territories the group conquers once the dust settles on the battlefield. From the cabinet and the governors to the financial and legislative bodies, ISIS' bureaucratic hierarchy looks a lot like those of some of the Western countries whose values it rejects -- if you take away the democracy and add in a council to consider who should be beheaded.

Oil and land: What ISIS controls

The group seized control of Mosul, Iraq's second-largest city, this summer. But its power base is in Raqqa, eastern Syria, where ISIS is now in control of more than half of Syria's oil assets -- along with a number of oil fields in Iraq -- according to energy expert Luay al-Khateeb. Al-Khateeb says the oil is finding its way to the black market and could be making ISIS up to $3 million each day.

More than 11,000 people have traveled from abroad to fight in Syria and Iraq, officials suggest, although some have gone back home again. They align themselves with different factions, and sometimes change loyalties as groups merge, disband or change allegiances. Naturally, countries with bigger Muslim populations tend to send the largest number of fighters.

But some nations with relatively small Muslim populations have sent a disproportionately large number of jihadis. Finland, Ireland and Australia have the highest number of foreign fighters per capita, although Finnish security officials say a minority of Finns in their count went for humanitarian reasons.

I had just resumed school for second semester 300 level. This was February 2000. My mission was to storm port-harcourt from abraka and surprise my older sister who had just moved to another apartment.

All I had was the address to the new apartment. I’ve always loved to pull surprises and this was my biggest one at the time. I arrived ph in the evening via public transport and traced her new place. Me wey plan to surprise my sister con surprise myself. She had not moved in. Her present address, I didn’t have. Gsm; non-existent at the time, her office? Closed. I was practically stranded in the garden city. After recovering from my rude shock, I took the first 2 foolish decisions. I hailed a cab and told the can to take me to a happening joint. The type that runs all night. He told me it was a Tuesday, the happening joints really don’t happen on Tuesday. I insisted there had to be one. Well he had money to make, so he obliged me.

We got there. Dead end. Even the band members and the Dj were off duty.

We tried a second spot. No luck. By this time it was past 9pm. So it dawned on me that I should have been looking for a hotel. By the time I checked 2 hotels, I realized that had I not made wayward stops, I’d have been able to pay for a room.

I asked again where I could possibly chill till daybreak. A commercial nerve. Someone mentioned “opposite hotel presidential.” When I got to hotel presidential; opposite it that is; I was relieved. The groove was real. Outdoor joints, several bar tenders. Pot bellied men with pretty women drinking away their stress. I found my spot, got a seat, weighed my purse and saw that my vex money had been severely eroded. I couldn’t even afford a drink. But hey, I could watch.

The ladies of the night were present on their droves( soliciting customers). It was a sight to behold. If they got lucky, they hopped into vehicles of strange men. I enjoyed all I saw until it was midnight and the unexpected happened. All d joints started to lock up. On no time it was just me and the night nurses left on the road side.

“Why you no go stay hotel” “why you no go your sister house” “why she Neva pack go her new house?” I had answered all these questions repeatedly.

By now I was with the security of the hotel, begging to share their space with them till the earliest signs of daylight. They weren’t comfortable with me there. They had even suggested I go to ojuelegba, a spot on the famous Aba road that hosted a retinue of low class sex workers (low in the sense that the better sex workers were the ones who came opposite the hotel) I had turned down the idea politely.

Five minutes later, a police patrol can sailed by slowly with “victims” of their raid of ojuelegba. I didn’t believe my luck, assuming it was luck. Not long after, one of the busiest girls of the night walked into the security post. I had seen her severally that night. She had to be the busiest of the girls. Leave in a car, return in okada. That happened at least 4 times.she inquired what the problem was.

For the 66th time, I narrated.

She paused for a while. I had no idea what she was thinking. Then quietly she asked to see the contents of my bag. Two shirts, one trouser, soap can with blue long sponge and body cream. And identity card. Finish!

She thought for a while again and then made me an offer. She asked me to follow her to her apartment. I wasn’t sure what to do. Security didn’t want me there. From their eyes I could tell this was my last offer. She “napkined” on the bike ride to her house. This was 2am. A small living room and a room with one bed ms living room was as small as the room. It had no furniture. She offered me her bed and slept on the floor. I tried to refuse but she will have none of it. I was her guest. I don’t know if I really slept cos my legs remained on the floor with my back on d bed.

By 5 am I was up. She offered me water to shower but all I did was brush and wash my face. Her brother came in not long after without caring a second who I was, he went straight to sleep. As I made to leave, she untied an end of her wrapper, brought out a wad of notes and offered me 3 fifty naira notes. She bade me farewell.

Till now i never see her again...

INEC Releases 14 Names of Presidential Candidates for 2015 General Elections!!! READ MORE..

1.   The independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has published names of 14 presidential candidates for the 2015 general elections.
   Details of the names were released on the Commission’s website on Tuesday, showing that one presidential candidate and four vice presidential candidates are females.
   The candidates are Sen. Tunde Anifowose-Kelani as the presidential candidate of Accord Alliance (AA) and Ishaka Paul as his running mate, Rufus Salawu as Presidential Candidate of AD and Akuchie Clif as his vice president.
   Also published on the commission website were Alhaji Ganiyu Galadima andOjengbede Farida as the presidential and vice president of ACPN, as well asMani Ahmad and Obianuju Murphy-Uzohue as president and vice president for ADC.
   Others are Ayeni Adebayo as president and Anthony ologbosere, female for APA, Muhammadu Buhari and Prof. Yemi Osinbajo as president and vice president for APC, while CPC has Sam Eke as its presidential candidate andHassana Hassan as vice president.
   The Hope Party has High Ambrose Owuru and Alhaji Haruna Shaba as president and vice president, while KOWA party has Comfort Sonaiya and Alhaji Seidu Bobboi as president and vice president.

40 world leaders condemn attack in Paris Not Nigeria

                          




At least 3.7 million people, including 50 world leaders, marched in anti-terrorism rallies in Paris and elsewhere in France on Sunday for the 12 people that was killed in an attack on the Paris satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo. Look miles away to Nigeria where more than 2000 people were killed. No demonstration, not a single rally or world leader to condemn the attack in Nigeria by Boko Haram in what has been described as the deadliest attack in history.

Hollywood star, Boris Kodjoe questioned why world leaders are not concerned about Boko Haram. Osaseye agrees with Boris on this issue. But first, it starts with the people of Nigeria, then the leaders in Nigeria before the world. Nigerians are so quiet on this matter. It is as is.

Expert Urges Sickle Cell Patients to Stay Properly Hydrated & Warm During Harmattan

Obiageli Nnodu, Deputy Chairperson, Sickle Cell Support Society of Nigeria, said on Monday that sickle cell patients should drink more water and remain warm to avoid complications of their ailment.

Nnodu gave the advice when he spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

Nnodu, who is also a Consultant Hematologist at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, said that cold induces crises and complications for the afflicted.

She said dehydration also facilitated crises and complications in the management of the disease.

Nnodu said paying adequate attention to nutrition and hydration would reduce complications for sickle cell patients.

“Children identified to have Sickle Cell Disease should be encouraged to drink a cup of water on waking up, and frequently during the day to ensure the yellow color of their urine becomes white,” she said

Nnodu said that they should also be given a high-protein diet, fruits and vegetables, noting that this would reduce mortality and complications in patients with sickle cell disease.

She said early diagnosis through newborn screening remained a major prevention against the prevalence of the disease.

She added that the Sickle Cell Support Society advocated for massive awareness and education on the ailment.

“Information about sickle cell disease should also be incorporated into the primary school curriculum so that stigma and other misconceptions about the disease will be avoided,” Nnodu said.

She said the society in collaboration with other stakeholders was working to provide interventions in the prevention and management of the disease in Nigeria.

Over 2000 people killed by Boko Haram in Baga, Borno state? BBC.

BBC is reporting that over 2000 people may have been killed by Boko Haram militants in a fresh attack on Baga town in Borno state yesterday January 7th. A state official in Borno state, Musa Alhaji Bukar told BBC that bodies lay scattered on Baga streets and that the whole town has been destroyed. On Saturday, a military base was run over by the sect members in Baga town.

Gunmen Storm Paris Magazine | 12 Killed, 10 Wounded

               

Gunmen on Wednesday stormed the offices of French satirical magazine, Charlie Hebdo, killing 12 and wounding 10, in an apparent terror attack.

Dressed in black hoods, the gunmen invaded the premises, firing automatic weapons at people, while shouting “Allahu Akbar,” a phrase commonly translated as “God is great,” USA Today reports. The attackers are also said to have remarked that the “prophet was avenged.”

The magazine is known for its controversial drawings and cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed and other religious figures.

Among those killed were the magazine’s editor, Stephane Charbonnet and four cartoonists.

According to reports, hours before the attack, Charbonnet had engaged in a public feud with terrorist, group ISIS via Twitter.

Hindu women to have 4 children to stop rise of Christianity in India

                           
The statements of a parliamentarian from the Hindu nationalist party in power have fueled the existing controversy on conversions to Hinduism in India with a large number of Muslims, Christians and Buddhists.

A parliamentarian of the Hindu nationalist party in India asked Hindu women to have at least four children to "protect their religion" from a looming drop and possible extinction.

Sakshi Maharaj said Tuesday that  "The time has come for Hindu women to have at least four children to protect the Hindu religion"

Muslim and Christian groups as well as opponents of the government have accused the Indian radical organizations of forcing or inducing members of religious minorities to convert to Hinduism.

Hindus account for 80% of India's population of 1.25 billion. The country is officially secular and has a large number of Muslims, Christians and Buddhists. The birth rate in India has dropped dramatically in 20 years, in part because of better education of women, according to a recent government study.

Ugandan Rebel Commander Wanted for War Crimes Surrenders

The Ugandan military on Wednesday confirmed that a top notorious commander of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) wanted for war crimes has surrendered.

Lt. Col. Paddy Ankunda, the Ugandan army spokesman said that Dominic Ongwen, wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for war crimes and crimes against humanity surrendered in the Central African Republic (CAR).

“It is such a huge success in the anti-LRA campaign,” Ankunda said.

Gen. Katumba Wamala, Chief of Defense Forces of the Ugandan military earlier said that he had not yet gotten the full details of Ongwen’s surrender.

Ongwen, one of the top commanders of the LRA, surrendered on Monday to Ugandan and U.S. troops hunting down the rebel outfit in the jungles of CAR and northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

“The surrender of Ongwen is a major blow to the LRA; Ongwen has been one ofJoseph Kony’s top protégés.

“He rose in the ranks since 1990, when he was abducted as a child soldier at the age of 10,” said Casper Agger, Enough Project expert and Ugandan based field researcher.

“As part of the LRA core command, his surrender is a very significant step in the efforts to bring a final end to the LRA,” he added.
“The apprehension of the LRA Commander Dominic Ongwen would be a major opportunity to advance justice for the LRA’s long record of atrocities.

“For 10 years, Ongwen has been a fugitive, sought on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity by the ICC.

He should be promptly surrendered to face justice,” said Ida Sawyer, senior Africa researcher at Human Rights Watch, in a statement issued on Wednesday.

Ongwen is one of the four remaining LRA commanders wanted by ICC to answer charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in northern Uganda where the outfit waged a two-decade-long rebellion until 2006.

Following a military offence, the outfit was ejected out of Uganda and is currently operating in the jungles of the CAR and northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

Ghanaian socialite, Nayele Ametefeh who was arrested in November 2014, after she was found in possession of 12 kilograms of cocaine worth $5 million at the London Heathrow Airport, has been sentenced to 8 years and 8 months in prison. 

Ametefeh, who is also known as Ruby Adu Gyamfi and “Angel,”was sentenced at Isleworth Crown Court in London, The Voice Online reports.

Her arrest was a big scandal in Ghana, as it was alleged that she was trafficking the drugs to help some high-ranking foreign affairs and security officials.

India Wants Collaboration Between Bollywood & Nollywood

India’s Acting High Commissioner in Nigeria Kaisar Alam on Sunday said the commission will facilitate collaboration between Nollywood and Bollywood – Nigeria and India’s movie industries, respectively.

He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that the two countries’ film industries had a lot to contribute to their Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Alam said that stakeholders in the film industries from Bollywood and Nollywood could partner or exchange programmes that would yield mutual benefits and promote better understanding between the two countries.

According to him, India is the second largest producer of films in the world, next only to Hollywood.

“Indian films are very popular in several countries like Russia, China, Indonesia; and even in Nigeria.

“India can use its more than 100 years of experience in Bollywood to assist Nigeria if the people in the industry can communicate exactly what they need to us.

“The people in the industry have to come forward to tell us exactly where they need assistance and in what form.

“The film industry contributes significantly to the GDP of India. I understand that Nollywood also contributes significantly to the GDP of Nigeria,’’ he said.

He said collaboration between Nigeria and India in the movie industries will boost both country’s economies.

New Head of UN Mission for Ebola Response Assumes Duty in Ghana

Ismail Ahmed, the new Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Saturday arrived in Accra, Ghana, to assume duty as the Head, UN Mission for Ebola Emergency Response (UNMEER).

A statement made available to UN correspondents in New York on Sunday stated that he would take over from Anthony Banbury.

According to the statement, Ahmed in a meeting with UNMEER workers commended the activities of the response team in fighting Ebola Virus Disease in that country.

“This is a global crisis. We definitely have a difficult time ahead of us, but we can achieve it.

“We have to get rid of this virus. This is within our reach, we should not be complacent.

“We need to keep going until we don’t have even one case, the work ahead remains very hard but we really have no other choice, the statement quoted the new head as saying.

According to the statement, Banbury, in his address, had earlier stressed the need to eliminate the disease.

“Even while we face a lot of hard work in the days, weeks and months ahead, it’s important to pause and think back to where we were when we started.

“There are predictions that there will be 1.4 million cases by now,’’ the statement quoted him as saying.

According to the statement, Ahmed will visit Liberia and Sierra Leone and Guinea to reinforce UNMEER’s strategic priorities.

A report by UNMEER indicated that the three affected countries have capacity to isolate and treat Ebola patients.

Before his new appointment, Ahmed served as Deputy Special Representative and Deputy Head of the UN Support Mission in Libya.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the latest report from the World Health Organisation (WHO) shows that there are 20,206 confirmed, probable or suspected cases of Ebola and 7,905 reported deaths.
